ETIAS Guide for UK Travellers: EU Travel Authorisation Explained

ETIAS Overview

ETIAS stands for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It is a new digital travel authorisation that visa-exempt travellers, including UK nationals, will need in order to enter 30 European countries once it is introduced. ETIAS is not a visa. Instead, it is a pre-travel screening system, similar in concept to the U.S. ESTA, designed to assess travellers before they arrive at the border.

Under the scheme, nationals from visa-exempt countries such as the UK, the United States, Canada and Australia will need to obtain an ETIAS authorisation before travelling. It will apply across 30 countries, including all Schengen Area states as well as Cyprus.

The purpose of ETIAS is to strengthen border management by enabling authorities to carry out advance security and suitability checks before a traveller arrives in Europe. This includes assessing information provided in the application against a range of EU databases to identify potential concerns relating to security, immigration compliance or public health. While the process is intended to be quick and straightforward for most travellers, it allows authorities to flag higher-risk cases for further review in advance of travel.

The system is expected to launch in in the last quarter of 2026, although no exact start date has been confirmed.

Application process

The application process will be completed online through the official EU website or mobile application, both of which are not yet active. Most applications are expected to be processed within minutes, although some may take longer and, in exceptional cases, up to around 30 days.

Travellers should also be aware that ETIAS is not yet open for applications and once the system goes live, applications should be made through the official EU platform. The EU has indicated that there will be several months’ notice before applications open, allowing travellers and businesses time to prepare.

Travel and Entry

An approved ETIAS will generally be valid for three years, or until the traveller’s passport expires, whichever happens sooner. It will allow short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period, consistent with existing Schengen rules. The expected fee is €20 for applicants aged between 18 and 70, with no charge for those under 18 or over 70.

Holding a valid ETIAS does not guarantee entry. Border officials will continue to make the final decision on admission when a traveller arrives. Travellers must still apply for the appropriate visa if their nationality, purpose of travel or intended length of stay falls outside the scope of visa-free travel.
